Former Israeli Prime Minister and current Defense Minister Ehud Barak pledged, as his election campaign slogan, to withdraw from southern Lebanon, which he did in May, 2000, as per agreement with Syria and Lebanon. You ask, "What was Israel doing in southern Lebanon in the first place?" The answer is clear, as it represents the "common denominator" in most every situation where Israel has been forced to go on the offensive: to protect her national security. In this case, Israel would go into Lebanon in 1985 to create a ten mile buffer between her northern border and the constant barrage of shelling from the PLO and Iranian/Syrian-backed Hezbollah forces. The conflict resulted in Arafat's PLO being driven from Lebanon, but Hezbollah remained. In May of 2000, after sweeping the Israeli elections, Prime Minister Ehud Barak withdrew Israeli troops from Lebanon. This left a vacuum; an opportunity for the terrorist organization known as Hezbollah to bring the fight to Israel's doorstep. They did not disappoint. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, under pressure from George W. Bush, demanded the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, for the purposes of facilitating peace. Much like the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, this left a vacuum that resulted in the creation of a terrorist state in Gaza. It was not as if HAMAS took over the Gaza Strip (this would come later) and implemented their own government in the region. No, the Arabs of Gaza democratically elected the terror organization as the government of choice. This, alone, should provide a shocking, albeit realistic glimpse at what a "Palestinian" state will look like in and around Jerusalem. Even so, Israel fulfilled their end of the "deal", and what did they get in return? So, what is different now that has led the Israeli government, and the Bush administration, to believe land concessions and a "two-state solution" will be the catalyst for peace, especially in the presence of every conceivable indicator pointing to the contrary? Such a mindset is enough to bring PM Ehud Olmert's sanity into question. Truth be told, there will never be true "peace" in the Middle East until the Prince of Peace brings it Himself. It may seem as if Israel is being pushed closer to her destruction but you should know that it only seems that way. The LORD has indicated He will never allow Israel to be destroyed. The events unfolding between Israel and her enemies will only become reality in accordance with His timeline; a divine plan that will end not in Israel's destruction, but her deliverance and redemption. Rest assured, this is a "game of chess" in which George Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas are mere "pawns" serving a purpose. The final move is imminent, and the King of Kings will be glorified. ******************************************************************************************************* RETURN TO CHRISTIANS STANDING WITH ISRAEL HOMEPAGE
