Flavius Josephus
ANTIQUITIES OF THE JEWS
Foreword by Mikael Knighton:
Flavius Josephus is
widely regarded as one of the most influential
historians in all of Jewish history. Born in 37 A.D. in
Jerusalem, Josephus became a scholar of Jewish law and
studies routinely with the Sadducees and Essenes of the
time. However, Josephus would eventually align himself
with the Pharisees as the chief, scholarly entity in all
of Judea and Samaria. At the age of 25, Josephus
travelled to Rome in an attempt to free several,
imprisoned high priests. He accomplished this with the
help of the wife of Nero, whose name was Poppaea. Upon
accomplishing his objective, Josephus would return to
Jerusalem only to discover the entire country in the
throws of a revolt in 65 A.D. |

The Wars of the Jews

| "The people who are
interviewed in this book live on Kibbutz Gesher Haziv in
the Western Galilee of Israel, as does the author. This
kibbutz is just a few kilometers south of the Lebanese
border. There is a beautiful beach not far away, and the
valley around the kibbutz holds fields of wheat as well
as groves of banana, avocado, and persimmon trees. On a
normal day you would think you had found the Garden of
Eden.
But, during the Second Lebanon War, which lasted just 33
days, dozen of katyusha rockets rained down on Kibbutz
Gesher Haziv. The families refused to move and
exemplified the unwavering spirit of the Israeli people
as they faced an unceasing barrage of missiles.
The author’s daily diary, and her interviews with the
stalwarts who stayed in the kibbutz during these fearful
days, gives us an awe-inspiring glimpse of the
unwavering spirit of the Israeli people as they faced an
unstoppable barrage of missiles. It goes beyond the war,
into the days after the cease fire and the rebuilding of
the homes and lives of the members of this border
kibbutz." |

"This is
an even-paced, detailed, deliberate account of a sincere
New Englander's move to Israel in 1990, where he enlists
as a paratrooper just before the beginning of the Gulf
War. Despite his weak grasp of Hebrew, Harmon graduates
from basic training and soon finds himself guarding the
country's borders and volunteering for raids against
known and suspected terrorists. Throughout his service
in the West Bank and Lebanon, he maintains a measured
tone sympathetic to the hardships of neighboring
Palestinians, even as he's called back from civilian
life following an upswing in violence. For such a
strictly chronological account-not merely day-to-day but
at times moment-to-moment-Harmon's work is surprisingly
captivating. Though he isn't always able to distinguish
between pertinent and expendable information, Harmon's
voice is so consistent and genuine that it's impossible
not to identify with his steadfast journey. An
illuminating account of a much-covered conflict, this is
a memoir for anyone who wants a look behind the daily
headlines."
